Drawing with your sewing machine

April 29, 2009

Yes you read the title right!

I’m going to teach you today how to set up your sewing machine to “draw” with it.
Now before you go ahead and make the excuse by saying you haven’t got a fancy sewing machine…… have a look at my little basic tool.

2002_01040001

An Elna 2003 basic model. Isn’t anything fancy and has everything I need to do basic sewing and “drawing” with it.

First of all:
you need a darning foot that is made for your machine. This is mine. I think they look similar to all machines.
2002_01040003

Next Check out your machine….
the feed teeth maybe up on your machine – you will need to lower them.
2002_010400072002_01040008

The next bit is to remove the normal foot on your machine and the bit that holds the foot on…
Yes you are doing a bit of easy surgery… Don’t be afraid… Check up your own machines instruction book just in case its different to mine though…
2002_01040010

Now attach your darning foot.
2002_01040012

now close up your machine and set your stitches to normal stitching and longest stitch.
2002_010400142002_01040013

Now you are ready to “draw” with your machine.
Take some stiff material such as denium, canvas or put some cotton material in a sewing ring to make it tight. You can also sew on cardstock and thick papers.

You move the material as the feet on your machine will not move the material for you.
2002_010400151

Here I used purple denium and did a simple heart and swirl pattern.
2002_01040016 2002_01040017

I cut around this picture to make an embellishment I could use on a card or a scrapbook page.
You can “seal” the edge of your material if you like with a little of modpodge on the edge of the finished embellishment.

Or you could sew directly onto a page. Its all up to you. Your imagination is now the limit.

Have heaps of fun! I’d love to see your creations using this technique…. Give me links to your online galleries below if you do it.

Thanks so much for visting my blog.

How to make a draw string bag

April 22, 2009

I am trying really hard to be plastic shopping market bag free in this household….
When I eliminated them  I found that I had nothing to put my sons dirty cloth nappies into when I was out and about….. so had to make some bags to put them in.

14finbag
It is big enough to fit two rolled up cloth nappies into when I’m out and about. Yes I did make two just in case!

Here’s the how to sheet in PDF for you so you can make your own. You can use it for anything. Really handy!
